The deceased, Jayamma, a resident of Challaghatta, was a homemaker. A group of people who had gone near the lake for a funeral found the red-coloured trolley suitcase floating in the waterbody at 1pm. As they observed it closely, they found a hand and part of a body inside it.

They alerted Kumbalagodu police, who rushed to the spot along with scene of crime officers (SOCO) team and shifted the body for postmortem after collecting evidence. Deputy commissioner of police (south-west) Anitha B Haddannavar said, “The body is not only decomposed, but has been partially eaten by aquatic animals; maggots were found too. The jaw portion is missing and the throat has been slit open. So, it is not yet clear how she died.

”Jayamma was staying with her son, his wife and two grandchildren, while her husband, Boregowda, lived separately in Rajajinagar. According to her son, Jayamma left home at 3.35pm on July 15 and did not return.

The family initially searched for her at the houses of relatives and friends and those of neighbours. Her mobile phone was switched off, raising concern among family members. Her son filed a missing-person complaint the next day, according to which she was wearing a gold mangalya chain, earrings and a ring on the right hand when she went missing.
