Mangalore, Mar 10, 2013: The festival of Mahashivaratri is being celebrated with religious fervor today. Various temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in Mangalore and other parts of the district, are decked up for the great event.


In Mangalore, Mahashivaratri is celebrated with grandeur at the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Temple, Kadri Sri Manjunatha Swami Temple, Kavoor Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple,  Sri Panchalingeshwara Temple at Pandeshwar and  Sri  Somanatheshwara Temple at Ullal among other shrines.

Devotees are seen thronging the temples which will offer various special poojas and rituals to Lord Shiva on this most auspicious day.


As the day progresses, more devotees are expected to visit the temples to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva and offer various Abhishekas to him.


Maha Shivaratri, which literally translates to “great night of Shiva” is a Hindu festival is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Maagha according to the Hindu calendar. The day is celebrated to venerate Lord Shiva, an important deity in Hindu culture. People often fast on the night of Shivaratri and sing hymns and praises in the name of Lord Shiva. It is believed that the people who fast on this night and offer prayers to Lord Shiva bring good luck into their life.
