Kerala-registered vehicles violating traffic rules to be seized: Mangaluru police

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, July 10, 2025: In a bid to clamp down on rising traffic violations, Mangaluru city police have announced that Kerala-registered vehicles involved in traffic offences—particularly rash or high-speed driving—will now be seized on the spot.

According to officials, there has been a noticeable surge in violations committed by Kerala-registered two-wheelers, with nearly 90% of the offenders identified as students studying in colleges within Mangaluru and its outskirts. These students are frequently accused of reckless riding, putting public safety at risk.

Despite issuing notices based on CCTV footage, police say compliance has been minimal. In response, City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has directed officers to immediately seize any Kerala-registered vehicle found violating traffic norms. These vehicles will be released only after fines are paid.

Commissioner Reddy confirmed that the law permits such action. He also noted that the issue was recently discussed with the Superintendent of Police of Kasaragod, who expressed full support for the move. In addition, Mangaluru police stations have been conducting regular awareness sessions in local colleges to promote traffic discipline.

“If students continue to ignore warnings issued by college authorities and law enforcement, seizure of their vehicles is unavoidable,” the commissioner stated.

Residents have voiced concern over repeated violations by outstation students and urged college managements to take greater responsibility. They demanded that institutions strictly educate students on local traffic laws and enforce disciplinary measures in cases of non-compliance.

Reported offences include helmetless riding, triple riding, driving against the flow of traffic, over-speeding, using tinted car windows, and aggressive driving. In some cases, locals who attempted to intervene were allegedly threatened by the violators.

With mounting pressure from the public, Mangaluru police have pledged to step up enforcement efforts and restore traffic order in the city.
