KACES observes 200th birth anniversary of Dr. Herman Moegling

Mangalore, Oct 28, 2011 : The Karnataka Christian Education Society (KACES) observed the 200th birth anniversary of Dr. Herman Moegling (1811 – 1881), a German missionary from Basel Mission, in the Bishop Jathanna Auditorium, Balmatta. 

Dr. Moegling spent most of his life in West Karnataka and bears the credit of publishing the first Kannada newspaper, titled Mangalooru Samachara, in 1843. A doctorate was conferred on him for his literary work called Bibliotheca Carnataka in Kannada. He also translated a number of Kannada works in German, some of them being Lakshmisha’s Jaimini Bharatha and the Dasa Sahitya of Kanakadasa and Purandaradasa. 

 

 

 

 

The highlight of the event was the presence of Dr. Moegling’s descendants Monika Landgraf, Peter Landgraf, Wilfried Landgraf, and Jorn Ponader, who had specially flown in from Germany to attend this occasion. A number of well-wishers in Germany, Rudiger Klan, Christina Schmidt, Christa Klan, Peter-Jens Kaundinya, Sabine Schrieber, Ursula Kaundinya, Cordelia Hohwald, Wolfgang Hohwald, Inge Heckelmann, Ulrich Heckelmann, Madeleine Wirth, and Magdalene Weichel were also present. 

The guests of honor were escorted to the dais by Rev. Sandeep Theophil and Dr. D. R. Sadananda, the treasurer of KACES, welcomed the gathering. Dr. B. M. Hegde, the former vice chancellor of MAHE, who was the chief guest of the event, lit the ceremonial lamp. 

A German book “Eine Reise in Die Religionen” and its English translation “A Journey Into Religions” was released by Dr. Hegde. 

Dr. Honey Cabral presided, Dr. Hegde felicitated all the German guests, and Rev. Theophil delivered the vote of thanks. 

A cultural presentation by the students of BEM High School formed part of the event.
