Mangalore, oct 29, 2013 : Shrikanth Prassan, a team member of the Indian Water Portal has said that the rain water in Mangalore region which receives 4000 mm rainfall in 100 days can be utilized for various purposes.
Participating in an interaction with the media on October 28, Monday, he also gave examples of rain water harvesting methods adopted in various places like New Mangalore Port Trust, Manipal University, Yenepoya Medical College and Farangipete.

He also explained how Surangas and Madakas can be useful in rain water harvesting and on the rain water harvesting areas in DK, Udupi and Kasargod districts.
The 15 member team of Indian Water Portal had visited various places in and around Mangalore from October 24 to 27 to study the local management system.
Ashish Panda, another team member spoke on the water harvesting techniques used in Thar Desert of Rajasthan which receives less than 100 mm rainfall. He said in Thar rain water is collected in ponds, rivers and ’Beris’ (well dug to collect the flowing water), and artesian wells.
He said people in Jaisalmer depended merely on water storage tanks while in Jodhpur, 90 per cent of families depended on rain water for agriculture.
Team members of Indian Water Portal Amita, Chicu, Hamsa, Bishwadeep, Nisha, Prateek, Makarand, Manu, Rekha, Sabita,Seetha, and Usha,veteran journalist Shree Padre, K S Lingegowda and Krishna Moolya were also present.
