Mangalore, Aug 16, 2013 : District in-charge Minister and State Minister for Forest and Ecology B Ramanatha Rai has directed the Deputy Commissioner to find a scientific solution to the garbage problem at Pachanady within a week after visiting the place and studying the situation.
The Minister’s directive came at a meeting held at the DC office on August 15, Thursday in the presence of local legislators, MCC officials and corporators concerned.
The Minister also directed the MCC Commissioner to look into the problem. He stressed the need for greater awareness among the people on the door-to-door waste collection and waste segregation schemes.
The Minister also directed the Forest Department to grow good varieties of 4000 trees in the area that help in reducing the stench. Rai further asked health officials to respond to any health related grievance of residents of the area due to the presence of the garbage yard.
The Minister told the DC that use of Bio-Enzymes was inevitable to reduce stench and to avert pollution. The problem would aggravate and there would be shortage of space if the process of covering the waste with soil continues. Every day at least 240 to 300 tonnes of waste are dumped here. There is a need for all TMCs to ensure wastes are disposed in their respective areas, the minister said. He also clarified that the DC has been given all authority to deal with the problem.
Legislators JR Lobo, BA Mohideen Bava, Commissioner Ajith Hegde, Additional DC Dayananda, Range Forest Conservator Shanthappa, DCF Palayya, Dr Sudarshan, Environment Officer, Corporators and others were present.
