Kadaba, January 14, 2026: In Dakshina Kannada district, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning occurred suddenly yesterday evening. Areas around the slopes of Kumara Parvata, including Kadaba, Nettan, Kukke Subrahmanya, and Panja, experienced torrential rainfall with lightning. Since it coincided with festival time, daily life was thrown into disarray.
The unseasonal rain at the very beginning of the New Year 2026 disrupted people’s routines. Roads were flooded after rain that lasted for over an hour. Residents returning home from offices and commuters faced severe difficulties due to the sudden heavy downpour in the evening.

Impact on Devotees and Travelers: Thousands of devotees who had come to the famous pilgrimage site of Kukke Subrahmanya in South India were caught in the rain and left bewildered. Travelers arriving at the Subrahmanya Road railway station and devotees heading to the temple had to struggle without proper shelter. The heavy water accumulation on the roads also caused traffic disruptions.
Effect on Markets: With Wednesday being the ‘Makar Sankranti’ festival, shopping in the market had been brisk on Tuesday. However, the evening downpour dampened the enthusiasm of both shopkeepers and customers. People who had come to buy flowers, fruits, and vegetables had to take shelter under shop awnings to protect themselves from the rain. The unseasonal rainfall has also caused concern among horticulture farmers and plantation crop growers, including those cultivating bananas and coffee.
