Mangalore, Oct 13, 2012: Addressing the gathering at a felicitation ceremony organized in his honor by the Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Employees’ Association at NGO Hall on Oct 13, Saturday, Maruthi Manpade, president of Karnataka State Gram Panchayat Employees’ Association, which is affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said that the recommendations of the Third State Finance Commission, which provide for more funds to GPs, should be properly implemented.
Stating that GP workers are still poorly paid, he said that GP workers’ salaries must be increased immediately. He also said that the Third Finance Commission had recommended grants based on population for GPs, adding that GPs can develop only when the state government earmarks Rs. 1 crore for each GP.
Complaining that the state government has not implemented the recommendations of the commission even two years after getting the recommendations, he said that development work is paralyzed in most GPs. GPs usually spend the funds allotted to them on paying electricity bills and giving salaries to workers.
He announced that the association will protest in January and will also hold a convention to raise its voice against the open market system and vacant bill collectors’ posts in GPs.
GP Presidents’ Union President Deviprasad Shetty honored Maruthi Manpade with a shawl, memento, citation, and garland.
CPI(M) Secretary B. Madhava was also present.
