Kasaragod, Aug 19, 2026: A family in Ottamavinkal, Kundangui, near Kasaragod, has been left in distress after a large underground cave was discovered beneath their newly built house just days before their planned housewarming ceremony.
The house was constructed using the family’s lifelong savings, proceeds from the sale of the wife’s jewellery, and bank loans. They were preparing to move into their dream home when the shocking discovery was made during excavation work for a septic tank.
A housewarming ceremony had been scheduled for August 28. As part of the preparations, a JCB excavator was being used beside the house to dig a pit for the septic tank. However, after digging to a depth of about two metres, the ground suddenly gave way with a loud crash.
Further inspection revealed a large cave running beneath the house. Water was found flowing through the cave, which is said to be nearly twice the height of an average person.
The presence of flowing water and the resulting soil instability have raised serious concerns about the safety of the structure. Fearing that the house could collapse at any time, the family now faces an uncertain future and worries that they may never be able to live in the home they built with years of sacrifice and hard-earned savings.
