Mangalore, March 24, 2012: Delivering the inaugural address at the 8th university-level Vidhyarthi Sahitya Sammelana, a literary meet for the students of University College today, Jogi, the magazine editor of Udayavani, said that social networking sites and the English media have taken people far away from Kannada literature. He also complained that English newspapers encourage consumerism and do not focus on literature unlike Kannada newspapers and magazines, which link people to the world of Kannada literature.
Pointing out that the best writers hail from rural areas, he said that people in the rural areas have more interest in literature. He also urged students to study literature deeply and not just stick to the writings of a few authors.
Giving some writing tips, he said that students can never be short of topics to write on because there are hundreds of topics around. Real life incidents can easily be converted into short stories, he added.
Prof. K. Chennappa Gowda, the folk expert and registrar of Mangalore University, said that memories and experiences are important for a writer.
The winners of the essay writing competition presented their essays on this occasion with Usha Kattemane, the writer columnist, presiding over the session.
Devu Hanehalli, the program director of Akashvani Karwar, presided over the story session and Dr. Anand Khugvedi, a poet from Davanagere, presided over the poetry session.
Students from several colleges affiliated to the Mangalore University participated in this event.
