Mangaluru: Chain-snatching accused who escaped police custody arrested in Vijayapura

Mangaluru, Aug 12, 2026: Mangaluru South police have arrested a key accused in a chain-snatching case who allegedly assaulted a police officer and escaped from custody. The accused, identified as Altaf Hussain, a resident of Bagalkot, was arrested in Vijayapura.

The incident occurred in connection with a chain-snatching case reported near the Sooterpet Village Accountant’s Office on June 14, where a woman was allegedly robbed of her gold chain. The accused reportedly fled from the spot on a motorcycle.

As part of the investigation, police detained three suspects near Rosario School in Pandeshwar on June 26 and were taking them to the police station. During this time, key accused Altaf Hussain allegedly assaulted a police personnel, pushed him aside and escaped from police custody. The police officer sustained minor injuries, following which a separate case was registered at Mangaluru South Police Station.

Police had earlier recovered the stolen gold chain and motorcycle from two Uttar Pradesh residents, Ravi Baura and Mohammed Sahil Siddiqui alias Mohammed Sahil, in connection with the chain-snatching case.

A special police team was formed to trace Altaf Hussain. Acting on credible information that he was in Vijayapura, the team launched an operation in Vijayapura city on August 10, chased the accused and successfully apprehended him.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Mangaluru South Police Station Sub-Inspector Maruthi P., with police personnel Lakshman Salotgi, Sagar and Anjaneya participating in the operation.

The arrested accused was produced before the court for further legal proceedings. Police said their investigation revealed that six cases have been registered against Altaf Hussain in various parts of Karnataka.
