Phone hidden in clothes: Prajwal Revanna booked after being found with devices inside jail

Bengaluru, Aug 12, 2026: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Tuesday recovered an Android mobile phone from the prison barrack of former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru.

The recovery was made during a surprise inspection conducted by the CCB. Officials reportedly searched Revanna’s barrack and found the mobile phone concealed in clothes.

The Parappana Agrahara Police have registered an FIR against Revanna and another convicted prisoner, Pratap Rai, following the recovery of electronic devices, including a Redmi mobile phone, a pen drive and a mobile phone charger, from their barrack.

Revanna has been named as the prime accused in the case. Police said he shares the barrack with Rai, who is the only other inmate housed there.

When questioned by prison officials about the mobile phone, Revanna reportedly denied having knowledge of it. Police have seized the phone and other devices and launched an investigation into how they were brought into the high-security prison.

Following the recovery, a Jail Assistant Superintendent was suspended for alleged dereliction of duty. Jail Director General Alok Kumar ordered the suspension. A notice has also been issued to Jail Chief Superintendent Anshukumar, seeking an explanation for the alleged security lapse.

Jail authorities had conducted searches in the prison barracks on August 6, but no mobile phone was reportedly found in Revanna’s possession at the time.

Anshukumar has been directed to explain how the mobile phone reached the convict and identify those responsible for providing it. He has also been asked to submit the details by afternoon, failing which Revanna could be shifted to another barrack.

Prajwal Revanna was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted in a rape and intimidation case. He was also convicted of circulating videos of the sexual assault of a 48-year-old woman who had worked as domestic help at the Revanna family’s farmhouse in Hassan.

Following the emergence of the videos, Revanna fled to Germany and was subsequently suspended from the JD(S). He later lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election and was arrested after returning to India.
