Mumbai, Aug 12, 2026: Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday resigned from his position but will continue in the role until the end of his current term in February 2027.
In his resignation letter, Chandrasekaran said, “I have communicated to the Tata Sons Board that I have decided not to offer myself for reappointment when my term ends on Feb 20, 2027. I have asked the Board to decide on the succession soon to ensure a proper transition."
Chandrasekaran has been at the helm of Tata Sons since 2017, and his departure will mark a leadership transition at the holding company of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest business conglomerates.
Tata Sons oversees more than 30 companies, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Air India.
Shares of Tata Group companies fell following Chandrasekaran’s resignation, with TCS, Tata Steel and Tata Power among the stocks trading lower.
Chandrasekaran Steps Down Days Before AGM
The development comes days before Tata Sons’ annual general meeting on August 18, when shareholders are scheduled to vote on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as a director.
The question of Chandrasekaran’s continuation had already been a source of tension within the group. In February, Tata Sons deferred a decision on extending his tenure after Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, opposed his reappointment, Reuters had reported.
Dispute Over Chandrasekaran’s Term Extension
Noel Tata had sought a series of assurances as part of discussions over Chandrasekaran’s continuation, including a pledge that Tata Sons would not pursue a stock market listing. Chandrasekaran was not prepared to make such a commitment, according to Reuters.
Speaking about the conflict over the extension of his tenure in his resignation letter, Chandrasekaran said, “My current tenure as the Chairman of Tata Sons comes to an end on Feb 20, 2027. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended the extension of my next term for a period of five years, which was recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. Subsequently, the resolution was tabled in the Tata Sons Board on Feb 24, 2026. However, the proposal was not carried through because one of the Board Members did not support it, and in the absence of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision."
Differences also emerged between the two sides over the composition and representation on the Tata Sons board.
Chandrasekaran’s Journey In Tata
Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and rose through the ranks at Tata Consultancy Services, becoming its CEO in 2009. He was appointed chairman of Tata Sons in 2017.
His potential departure comes amid a challenging period for the conglomerate.
Air India has faced regulatory scrutiny following a fatal crash, TCS has been dealing with pressure on pricing, while a cyber incident at Jaguar Land Rover disrupted manufacturing and had wider repercussions for the UK economy.
This is not the first major dispute between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts. The group witnessed a particularly bitter fallout in 2016, when Tata Sons removed Cyrus Mistry as chairman following differences with Ratan Tata over corporate governance and the group’s management. The dispute subsequently escalated into a prolonged legal battle.
