Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 27, 2011 : Tanuja (37), who was admitted to SCS Hospital with burn injuries 10 days back, died on the night of Dec 26 Monday, allegedly due to medical negligence.

Tanuja had visited her mother’s house to participate in a Kola on Dec 16. Her clothes caught fire when she was putting rice into a pot of boiling water and she burned her legs badly. Her family immediately rushed her to SCS Hospital.

Reportedly, Tanuja’s family had paid a fee of Rs. 1000 to the hospital and Tanuja had suffered 25 percent burns. Her husband Thimmappa is a tempo driver in Suratkal and they have a daughter in Std IX and a son in I PUC. Her sister-in-law had also paid the hospital a fee of Rs. 5000 to get her admitted to the ICU immediately.

According to Tanuja’s relative Balakrishna, she was treated for 4 days in the ICU, after which she was moved to the general ward. The doctors were quite confident of discharging her within the next 2 – 3 days. On Saturday, the doctors conducted a surgery on Tanuja to facilitate the growth of new skin, following which she developed complications such as difficulty in excretion and pain in the abdomen. The nurse advised her to change sides frequently because the pain was due to gastric problems.

However, Tanuja suffered severe pain during the night and she was rushed to the ICU immediately. But she failed to respond to treatment and died.

Dr. Sathish Bhat confirmed to the media that the family is unhappy with the hospital, but that this was not a case of medical negligence. He also refused to clarify the issue further because “he was busy.”

The Kadri Police have registered a case and the body has been taken to Wenlock Hospital.
