Dalit headmistress complains of harassment by school teachers

Mangalore, May 27, 2013 : At the SC ST grievance redressal meeting held at the Mangalore Police Commissioner’s office on May 26, Sunday, a Dalit headmistress of the ZP School at Panelabarike in Pajeer village, complained that she was subject to harassment by two sub-ordinate teachers belonging to   upper caste.

The teacher Kamalakshi alleged that Ramakrishna G And his wife Rashmi who joined the school as  assistant teachers in  2011,had been harassing her in the name of caste and were also forcing her to tender resignation. She said though she had earlier lodged a complaint against Ramakrishna in February with the help of SDMC Chief who was a witness to the harassment, the police had filed a ‘B’ report after not mentioning the name of the witness in the FIR.

The Commissioner later assured to look into the case.

The headmistress later told reporters that she had also lodged a complaint with the Block Education Officer.

In yet another complaint, a Dalit leader Srinivas Shetty alleged that a member of the Kuppepadavu Gram Panchayat Hariyappa Muttur, a Dalit was threatened by the GP Chief  Chandrahas Shetty for protesting against illegal sand mining in the region.It was alleged that Shetty along with one Dinesh Moolya had barged into the GP member’s house and  abused Hariyappa and his mother and threatened the two of dire consequences. He also stated that the complaint with the Bajpe police was futile as the accused were  left scot free. The Commissioner also assured to look into the case.

Dalit leader SP Anand said there have been increasing instances of filing ‘B’ reports in cases of harassments  of Dalits. However, the Commissioner clarified that ‘B’ reports were filed after a thorough scrutiny of the cases.

M Mutturaya, DCP (Law and Order), D Dharmaiah, DCP (Crime and Traffic)  were also present.
