Mangaluru, October 10, 2026: Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. has issued strict directions to officials and the police to take necessary measures to prevent transgender persons from gathering along national highways at night, allegedly causing inconvenience to motorists and engaging in illegal activities.

Chairing a meeting of the District-Level Coordination and Monitoring Committee for transgender persons at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Darshan said several complaints had been received about transgender persons standing along national highways at night and troubling commuters.

He directed the police to first create awareness and warn those concerned against standing along highways. If the problem persists, strict legal action should be initiated, he said.

Representatives of transgender organisations who attended the meeting alleged that some people from neighbouring states were engaging in illegal activities in Mangaluru. They urged the authorities to take stringent action against those involved.

Officials informed the meeting that a list of 15 homeless transgender persons had been submitted to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to facilitate the allotment of housing sites. Steps are also being taken through the Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation to provide financial assistance and encourage self-employment among members of the transgender community.

According to a recent survey, 96 transgender persons are registered in Dakshina Kannada district. Officials said eligible individuals could apply through the Seva Sindhu portal to avail themselves of government rehabilitation assistance and welfare schemes.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narvade Vinayak Karbhari, Women and Child Development Department Deputy Director Sridhar, representatives of transgender organisations and officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
