Mangaluru, October 9, 2026: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) conducted a special inspection drive across the city on Wednesday to ensure cleanliness, hygiene and better waste management. A team of around 100 corporation officials and staff inspected approximately 2,000 commercial establishments during the operation.
Fines totalling ₹7,20,500 were collected under the Solid Waste Management By-laws, 2019, for violations including failure to segregate waste at source, use of banned single-use plastics, littering in public places, encroachment on footpaths causing inconvenience to pedestrians, and operating businesses without renewing trade licences.
According to reports submitted by five health inspectors, 1,334 establishments were visited during the drive. A total of 143 shops were fined, while fines amounting to approximately ₹1.26 lakh remain unpaid by 20 establishments.
The inspection also covered 28 shops that had not renewed their trade licences. In addition, 246 shopkeepers were found not displaying copies of their trade licences.
The corporation said further inspections would be conducted in the coming days. If violations are repeated, notices will be issued to the establishments concerned. Failure to comply with the rules even after the notices could result in the cancellation of trade licences. Items belonging to those continuing to encroach on footpaths will also be seized.
The MCC Commissioner said such special inspection drives would continue to raise public awareness and promote responsible waste management practices. The primary objective of imposing fines, the Commissioner clarified, was not revenue collection but to instil discipline and a commitment to cleanliness among citizens and business owners.
The Commissioner appealed to all residents and commercial establishment owners to strictly follow solid waste management regulations, segregate waste at source and hand it over to corporation vehicles, emphasising that maintaining a clean and beautiful Mangaluru is a shared responsibility.
