Mangalore, Nov 30, 2011: CITU organized a protest against the ritual of Made Snana at Kukke Subrahmanya Temple in front of the DC’s office on Nov 30 Wednesday.
Vasudev Uchila of CITU said in his protest address that a number of people might believe in this 400-year-old ritual, but it is the duty of CITU to create public awareness and stop caste discrimination.
Stating that a majority of the people who perform this ritual belong to the Dalit community, he said that the ritual requires devotees to roll over the banana leaf plates discarded by Brahmins after their meals in order to be cured of skin ailments.
Stating that the state government is responsible for the continuation of such a tradition, he said that this ritual ought to be banned.
He urged CM Sadananda Gowda to take the required steps to stop this ritual and eradicate superstition. He also flayed District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar and urged him to resign if he can do nothing to stop incidents such as the one in Sullia, in which protestors were assaulted.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Narendra Nayak, the rationalist, said that everybody has the right to question authorities and officials have no right to stop people from enquiring after public welfare. He said that there is no need for doctors in India if rituals such as Made Snana can really cure people of skin ailments.
