Mangaluru, Aug 27, 2025: The Catholic Board of Education (CBE), Diocese of Mangalore, distributed the Msgr Leslie F. Shenoy Scholarships to 88 deserving, needy, and excelling Catholic students beginning their first year of Pre-University studies. The ceremony was held at Shanthi Kiran Pastoral Institute, Bajjodi, on Wednesday.
Chief Guest Rev. Msgr Leslie F. Shenoy, benefactor of the scholarship, personally handed over the cheques to the recipients. Addressing the gathering, Msgr Shenoy highlighted the spirit of Christian service behind the initiative.
“This act of kindness is rooted in the commandment of Jesus, ‘Love thy neighbour.’ These scholarships come from my savings during my military service. I expect nothing in return except your prayers. Excel in your studies and, one day, share your blessings with others.”
Looking ahead, Msgr Shenoy announced a significant commitment on the occasion of his upcoming golden jubilee of priesthood.
“Next year, as I complete 50 years of priesthood, I will contribute an additional ₹50 lakhs to the scholarship fund. With this, many more students will be able to benefit. My message to you is simple – learn, shine, achieve excellence, and when you become self-sustainable, give back with generosity and help the needy,” he urged.
Rev. Fr Antony Shera, Parish Priest of Mulki and former CBE Secretary, served as Guest of Honour. Recalling the inception of the scholarship programme, he remarked:
“Msgr Shenoy has always shared his resources for the betterment of society. His noble gesture has now entered its second year, giving young minds the chance to learn, grow, and shine in the community. Msgr Leslie Shenoy is a model to all of us who takes opportunities to grow, learn, and shine.”
Also present were Rev. Dr Praveen Leo Lasrado, Secretary of the CBE, and Rev. Fr Santhosh Rodrigues, Director of Shanthi Kiran Pastoral Centre. Dr Lasrado welcomed the gathering, while Ms Preethi Gomes proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Mr Aloysius D’Souza.
“The Scholarship Legacy”
The Msgr Leslie F. Shenoy Scholarship was established under the Catholic Board of Education through the vision of Fr Antony Shera and the magnanimous contribution of ₹1 crore by Msgr Shenoy. The endowment, placed in a fixed deposit, generates interest used annually to support Catholic students across the Diocese of Mangalore.
Launched in 2024 under the leadership of Dr Lasrado, the scholarship scheme has already become a lifeline for many families. With Msgr Shenoy’s forthcoming golden jubilee contribution of ₹50 lakhs, the programme is set to expand its reach, carrying forward his legacy of faith-driven philanthropy and commitment to education.
