Mangalore, Jan 29, 2012: CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda inaugurated a 2-day conference organized by the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) on the theme of “new dimensions of science and technology: opportunities and challenges” at Mangalore University on Saturday. 


Speaking on the occasion, the CM said that Rs. 2 crores will be earmarked for KSTA in the 2012 – 13 budget as the state needs to increase enrolment percentage for higher education. Revealing statistics, he said that only 8 – 10 percent of the youth in the age group of 18 – 24 enroll for higher education, which is a small figure compared to that of foreign countries.

Anand Asnotikar, the minister for science and technology and fisheries, said that the regional science centre, which is being set up in Pilikula, will be inaugurated in June. He also said that the department plans to open regional science centres in Mangalore and Dharwad and 10 sub regional science centres all over the state and added that the government has already released Rs. 1.3 crore each for the proposed sub centres. 


V. Prakash, the scientist and chairman of Nutrition Society of India, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions in food processing technology on this occasion. 


J. Krishna Palemar, the environment minister, and M. N. Vidhyashankar, the state principal secretary, were also present.
