Bantwal: Mob attacks SDPI office; four injured

Bantwal, May 27, 2013: The SDPI office at BC Road-Kaikamba  was attacked by a group of hundreds of people on May 26, Sunday evening.  Reports say that the assailants targeted four persons in the office and went beserk and damaged flex banners and even a bus shelter which was a contribution of SDPI.

Issac (32) from Kalladka, Azaruddin Fairoze (26), and Jabbar (26) from Bolantoor, as well as Riaz (22) from Shantiangady   have been hospitalized after being attacked. One of them, Isaac who has sustained serious head injuries is admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore. Bantwal police who rushed to the spot of the incident, brought the situation under control.


 Reports say three of the assailants too have got themselves admitted to the hospital. According to sources,the raid was in retaliation to an attack on an autorickshaw driver identified himself with the Congress near Volavoor on May 23. Adam Palla whose auto was hired by some unidentified people, was attacked after  throwing chilly powder on his face. Police had arrested an SDPI activist in connection with the incident.


According to a youth Congress leader, the SDPI activists had earlier protested when they handed over to the police an SDPI man in connection with the incident.


Meanwhile, Akbar Ali, District General Secretary of SDPI charges Congress workers of harassing SDPI activists and also alleged that  ten SDPI activists who had attended a marriage function earlier in the day were jeered at. He alleges that the SDPI office was attacked after the Congress workers’ act was questioned.
