Mangalore, Oct 1, 2012: Dr. Bernard Moras, archbishop of Bangalore, and Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore, inaugurated a 2-day laity synod organized by the All India Catholic Union, Karnataka Regional Laity Commission, and Catholic Sabha Mangalore on Oct 1, Monday at Pastoral Institute in Shanthi Kiran, Bajjodi.
The dignitaries on the dais were several bishops of Karnataka, Catholic Sabha President Nigel Pereira, AICU National Vice President Lancy D’Cunha, Dr. Peter Machado, and others. As many as 150 delegates from 14 dioceses took part in the conference.
The objective of the conference is to help lay people evaluate their participation in the Church’s mission and to implement the teachings of Vatican II.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Bernard Moras urged all vicars and bishops to preach the teachings of Jesus Christ, adding that it is the duty of the church to prevent people from leaving the Catholic faith.
The conference has been organized as part of the Year of Faith, as announced by Pope Benedict XVI. The Year of Faith begins this October and ends in November 2013 and will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Vatican I and the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Accordingly, similar conferences will be held throughout India, the conference in Mangalore being the second such conference in India. The first one was held in Delhi.
