Puttur,Jan 2, 2013: An elephant was the centre of attraction at Elmudi in Puttur on January 1, Tuesday as the pachyderm belonging to the Shiroor Mutt, which was being taken towards Sullia in a lorry, all of a sudden turned wild and began to show its prowess.
The elephant named “Lakshmisha” first chose to place its trunk inside the driver’s cabin and shake it, forcing the driver to run towards safety after halting the vehicle abruptly. The sudden brake and stopping of the vehicle, further angered the pachyderm which tried to push its mahout and created a ruckus by breaking the wooden logs inside the vehicle.
As news spread, people began to gather around, further angering Lakshmisha. At one stage police even resorted to a mild lathi charge to quell the mob. Meanwhile, barricades were also put up from preventing people coming closer to the elephant. Presently, specialist veterinarians from Trissur and Madikeri are awaited to inject the elephant with tranquilisers.
Earlier, on Tuesday, as the elephant refused to come under control, food was also thrown towards it. But, even after having his full, Lakshmisha remained unchanged and continued to show his power.
Finally, the police and fire service personnel chose to spray water on the elephant to help it cool down. Even the Mahout summoned from Sakleshpur failed to control the pachyderm.
In another interesting development, a veterinarian from the Puttur veterinary centre who was summoned to the spot, seemed to have not come out of the New Year hangover and might have possibly chosen to go by the saying ‘Drink till you drop.’ As the people looked towards the veterinarian with a hope that he will tame the elephant, to everyone’s surprise, he collapsed on the ground, and was later taken to a nearby place and allowed to rest.
Lakshmisha, the Shiroor Mutt elephant is presently being taken care of by Karunaker of Uppinangady at the behest of the Mutt as he has a history of going on rampage once in Udupi and also at Bellare.
