The Bengaluru police had earlier said that no arrests had been made in the incident that took place on Sunday. "Some people are being detained and questioned," police chief NS Megharikh told NDTV last night.

In a tweet on Wednesday describing the attack as shameful, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj had said that four men had been arrested.

Karnataka’s ruling Congress has been asked by party Vice President Rahul Gandhi to explain and "send report immediately" on the incident, his office tweeted.

The 21-year-old woman, a college student, was travelling with a group in a Wagon-R on Sunday night when it was stopped by a mob of at least 200 people.

Half an hour earlier, another car had run over a woman walking on the road. The crowd turned its anger on the Wagon-R.

The student was dragged out of the car, beaten and then allegedly stripped naked.

She tried to board a bus to escape but the passengers pushed her out. She even tried to get into an auto, said the All African students union.

Some reports said when a bystander tried to cover her with a T-shirt, he too was beaten.

The police chief said that after the pedestrian was killed, the driver of the car, believed to be Sudanese, was assaulted before he was moved to hospital.

"When they arrived, they saw the mob attacking the driver and wanted to help him, but they ran when the mob started chasing them," said Bosco Kaweesi, legal adviser of the African students union.
