The Congress and the Trinamool Congress submitted notices to discuss the National Register of Citizens in Lok Sabha. Opposition parties also staged a protest outside Parliament before the day’s proceedings began.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 12 pm within minutes of starting due to ruckus over the issue.

Congress MP and the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "Genuine Indians should not be sent out of the country. NRC should not be politicised and used as vote bank. It is a human rights issue, not a Hindu-Muslim issue."

BJP chief Amit Shah said that NRC is the soul of Assam Accord, which was signed by Rajiv Gandhi.

"There should be discussion on why NRC came into existence. Rajiv Gandhi signed Assam Accord in 1985. NRC is the soul of Assam Accord. They didn’t have the courage to implement it, we had."

Shah’s comments led to uproar in Parliament. Opposition MPs stormed the well of the house, while Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu was trying to calm them down.

BSP chief Mayawati has also criticised the government over the Assam NRc final draft. "Citizenships of 40 lakh minorities have been almost seized in NRC draft in BJP-ruled Assam. If people living for a long time in Assam haven’t been able to provide proof about their citizenship, it doesn’t mean they should be thrown out of the country."

Earlier on Monday, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi hit out at the BJP over the final draft of NRC. In a Facebook post, Rahul Gandhi said, "The National Register of Citizens (NRC) was initiated by the UPA under Manmohan Singh to fulfil the commitment made in the Assam Accord of 1985. However, the manner in which this exercise has been undertaken by the BJP Governments at the centre and in Assam leaves much to be desired."

Meanwhile, the Assam government and the Home Ministry have assured the citizens that it is not the final list and citizens can appeal or object between August 20 to September 28.

The people whose names haven’t figured in the list can visit the local seva kendras after August 7 to know the reason behind their name not being in the list. Foreigner tribunals have also been set up to provide these people with legal support.
