Fishing Boat Sinks Near Maravanthe, Six Fishermen Rescued

Kundapur, Aug 16, 2026: A fishing boat that had set out from Malpe port sank in the Arabian Sea near Maravanthe late Friday night after water entered the vessel. All six fishermen on board were safely rescued.

The boat, ‘Sinchana’, owned by Krishna Puthran of Kota Kadri Kattu, had left Malpe for fishing on August 12. On August 14 night, an unidentified object reportedly struck the boat’s bottom, causing water to gush in.

The crews of nearby fishing boats ‘Brindavana’ and ‘Guru Darshan’ rushed to the spot and rescued all six fishermen. They later attempted to tow the damaged boat towards the shore, but the rope snapped amid strong waves about 12 nautical miles from the Gangolli lighthouse, and the vessel sank.

The loss has been estimated at around ₹45 lakh, including the boat, 2,500 litres of diesel, GPS and wireless equipment, fishing nets and a catch worth about ₹2.5 lakh.

A case has been registered at the Gangolli Coastal Security Police Station.
