PM Modi Expresses Concern Over Escalation in Iran-Israel Conflict Amid US Airstrikes

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, June 22, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, expressing deep concern over the recent escalation in the Iran-Israel conflict. This follows the United States’ entry into the conflict with airstrikes on three key Iranian nuclear sites—Natanz, Isfahan, and the underground Fordo facility.

PM Modi Expresses Concern

In a post on X, PM Modi stated, "Spoke with President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security, and stability."

The US strikes targeted key components of Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for civilian purposes. Fordo, a fortified site hidden under a mountain near Qom, was struck by at least six B-2 stealth bombers. Tomahawk missiles targeted Natanz and Isfahan. Fordo, publicly revealed in 2009, has been described as a protected enrichment plant capable of housing thousands of centrifuges.

US President Donald Trump, addressing the nation, issued a stark warning to Iran, stating, "There will be either peace or tragedy for Iran, far greater than we’ve witnessed over the last eight days." The Israeli Air Force also conducted airstrikes on military targets in western Iran in retaliation for Iranian missile attacks that injured civilians in Israel.

Experts have warned of the wider implications of the conflict on India’s trade with West Asian nations. India’s trade with Iran includes $1.24 billion in exports during fiscal 2025, with key items being basmati rice, bananas, soya meal, and tea. Imports from Iran were valued at $441.8 million, primarily in crude oil and natural gas.

India also maintains robust trade ties with Israel, with exports worth $2.1 billion and imports of $1.6 billion in 2024-25. As a nation with strong bilateral relations with both Iran and Israel, India has urged for restraint and a return to diplomacy to restore regional peace and stability.
