Mumbai, Jul 15, 2026: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has come under controversy following his recent marriage to Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Gauri Spratt, with a prominent Muslim cleric issuing a fatwa against the actor and declaring the interfaith marriage "haram" under Sharia law.
The fatwa was issued by Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta. In a video statement that has since gone viral on social media, the cleric criticised Aamir Khan’s decision to marry a non-Muslim woman.
"For a Muslim man, marrying a non-Muslim woman is haram," the cleric said, adding that interfaith marriages of this nature are considered impermissible under Islamic jurisprudence. He further stated that those who do not accept this interpretation would ultimately be accountable before God.

The Maulana also criticised Aamir Khan’s previous marriages, saying that repeatedly marrying and divorcing without being able to fulfil the responsibilities associated with marriage is unacceptable.
The actor’s marriage has also drawn criticism from some political and religious groups. Right-wing organisations, including the Bajrang Dal and Karni Sena, reportedly staged protests and accused the actor of promoting "love jihad." Maharashtra ministers Nitesh Rane and Sanjay Shirsat also criticised Aamir Khan, questioning the social impact of his personal choices.
As of now, Aamir Khan and his representatives have not publicly responded to the fatwa or the cleric’s remarks.
Aamir Khan, 61, married Gauri Spratt, who works in the beauty and wellness industry, in a private civil ceremony held at his Pali Hill residence in Bandra, Mumbai, on July 5. The ceremony was attended by close family members, friends, and the couple’s children.
The actor was previously married to Reena Dutta from 1986 to 2002, with whom he has two children, Junaid and Ira. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The couple announced their separation in 2021 and continue to co-parent their son, Azad.
