Bengaluru: Three arrested for assaulting migrant worker over wearing saffron towel

Bengaluru, Aug 27, 2025: Police have arrested three men for allegedly assaulting a migrant worker from Bihar, reportedly for wearing a saffron towel. The incident occurred in Kalasipalya on the night of August 25.

The arrested men have been identified as Tabrez (30), a mechanic from Nagawara; Imran Khan (35), a radium cutter from Banashankari; and Azeej Khan (37), a real estate businessman residing in Krishnappa Garden, Tilak Nagar.

The victim, 26-year-old labourer Slinder Kumar from Bihar, was loading goods around 9.30 p.m. when two men confronted him, allegedly abused him over the saffron towel, and began pushing him. His manager, Harikrishna, who tried to intervene, was also assaulted, with his shirt torn and threats issued against allowing workers to wear saffron towels. Before leaving, one of the attackers introduced himself as Bablu, according to the complaint lodged by Harikrishna.

Both Kumar and Harikrishna suffered minor injuries. The accused have been booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including charges of assault, hurting religious sentiments, and provoking breach of peace.

DCP (West) S. Girish said the case was first registered as a non-cognisable report before being upgraded to an FIR.

Following the incident, Kumar sought help from Hindu organisations, which staged a protest outside Kalasipalya police station demanding strict action. Hindu activist Tejas Gowda claimed the attack had caused fear among migrant workers and urged police to establish an outpost in the area for their safety.

The three accused are in custody, and further investigation is underway.
