Mumbai, Nov 25, 2025: A temple in Mumbai has become the centre of discussion after locals noticed something unusual during their visit. The idol of the Hindu Goddess Kaali Mata had been dressed in a manner that appeared similar to the depiction of Mother Mary, sparking widespread debate online.

The incident reportedly occurred at a temple in the Chembur–Vashi Naka area. Visitors were left puzzled, trying to understand how the idol in the sanctum sanctorum came to be adorned in this way. Soon, a video from the site began circulating on social media, showing what had taken place inside the premises and adding to the ongoing conversation.

Idol Found In Attire Resembling Mother Mary

According to Pune Mirror, the issue came to light when locals arrived for darshan and noticed the idol dressed in a bright yellow outfit with a crown and holding a baby, a look which is similar to that of Mother Mary. Many residents approached the priest, Ramesh, for clarification.

When confronted, the priest reportedly claimed that Goddess Kaali Mata appeared in his dream and instructed him to “give her the form of Mother Mary." While this explanation surprised some, others felt there was more to the story. A few locals alleged that the priest had been paid to carry out the act.

Video From Inside Temple Triggers Online Backlash

A video recorded by a visitor inside the temple was shared on Instagram. As he walked towards the sanctum, he said, “Yaha ek Kaali Mata ka mandir banaya gaya tha. Isko dekho wo Christian Missionary log kya karke rakhe hai yaha par dekhiye. Bhagwan ko bhi cross phena kar rakhe hai (This is Kaali Mata’s temple. Look at what these Christian Missionary people have done here. They have even made the deity wear a cross)." The clip also carried earlier images of the original idol.

Social Media Users Express Shock and Anger

As the clip continued to circulate, the outrage grew. Many viewers said they were shocked to see a revered Hindu deity presented in such a form, and they felt the act had crossed a line. Along with expressing anger, many users called for strict steps to be taken against the priest.

One user commented, “How do people even come up with such ideas?"

Another said, “What the f***? All the other religions are purposely provoking Hindus by such actions. It will only lead to conflicts."

A viewer asked, “This is blasphemy, isn’t it?" while another demanded strict action, saying, “This is not good. The person who did it must be arrested. It seems to be a deliberate act."

Someone else added, “Disgusting. Whoever did this, lacks basic human decency."

Police Intervention

Members of different religious groups also arrived to understand what had happened. They approached the authorities and submitted a complaint. According to Pune Mirror, the police then registered an FIR at the RCF Police Station.

Officers took priest Ramesh into custody and later presented him before the court. He was remanded to two days of police custody as investigators continue to look into whether others were involved in planning or encouraging the act.
