Mangalore, March 7, 2013 : Hundreds of women clad in black and sporting black sashes on their forehead and arms, held a silent demonstration for as long as two hours, from Hampankatta Junction to University College, on March 6, Wednesday, to oppose violence against women.
Madhu Bhushan, well-known activist from Vimochana, a Bangalore based women’s rights organization, who spoke on the occasion, emphasized the need to put up a united fight against atrocities. Citing several cases of violence against women in the district in the recent past in the name of tradition and culture. She said silence is the language of their protest.
Various organizations including Forum Against Atrocities on Women, Breakthrough Foundation and Vimochana took part in the part. Prominent among the participants from Vidya Dinker, Sabeeha Bhoomi Gowda, Merlyn Martis, Shahanaz, Rita Noronha, Gulabi Bilimale, Chandrakala Nandavar and Marathi writer Urmila Pawar.
The Women in Black Movement was taken up here by Vimochana from Bangalore and the first protest was held in 1992 after the Babri Masjid demolition. The movement has been initiated taking a cue from the silent revolt of Palestinian and Israeli Women in Tel-Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem against the war situation.
