9 Karnataka Congress workers arrested for throwing eggs at BJP MLA

Bengaluru, Jul 24, 2026: Nine Congress workers have been arrested for allegedly throwing eggs at BJP MLA B.P. Harish during the BJP’s counter-protest near the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) headquarters on Queen’s Road in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

Police said the identities of the arrested individuals have not yet been disclosed, but confirmed that all are Congress workers.

Addressing reporters, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack.

"So far, nine suspects have been arrested—five on Wednesday and four on Thursday. BJP leaders had planned to stage a protest at the KPCC office, but they were taken into preventive custody near Bengaluru Cantonment Railway Station. We are also probing how the bus carrying the detained protesters passed through that route. Eggs were hurled at a BJP MLA, and a case has been registered based on a complaint," he said.

In a statement, the Bengaluru Police reiterated that no individual or organisation would be permitted to violate the Karnataka High Court’s directions restricting protests outside Freedom Park, the city’s designated protest venue.

The police warned that any person or group engaging in unlawful protests, violence or disruption of public order anywhere in Bengaluru, other than at Freedom Park, would face strict legal action, irrespective of political affiliation.

Videos showing eggs being thrown at Harihar MLA B.P. Harish went viral on social media, after which police escorted him away from the scene.

The BJP also alleged that eggs were thrown at another MLA, C.N. Ashwath Narayan, and claimed that a bus carrying detained BJP workers was attacked. The party further alleged that some of its office-bearers were assaulted with pipes, sticks and rods.

Based on the complaints, the Shivajinagar Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

The incident followed a protest by Congress workers outside the BJP’s state headquarters in Malleswaram, prompting the BJP to organise a counter-protest near the KPCC office.
