Udupi, Jan 7, 2013  : “ Gandhiji had said that the nation can attain real freedom only when a lonely women can walk freely anywhere in our country during mid-night. But, the situation at present is such that women dread to step on to the road even during broad daylight”, regretted renowned Kannada writer and Kendra Sahitya Academy Award  winner Vaidehi.

She was speaking after receiving the ‘Sahityaranga Visharade’ award presented on behalf of Rangabhoomi, Udupi, at the  prize distribution ceremony of the 33rd state level Kannada drama contest organised by it at Muddana Mantap of MGM College   on January 6, Sunday.


Continuing, Vaidehi said grave crimes against women like rape can be prevented only when our political leaders have the will power to frame tougher laws. “Women do not need any mercy or sympathy, but the right to lead a dignified life,” said Vaidehi.


The function was presided over by District Minister Kota Srinivas Poojari.  ‘Kalanjali,’ a souvenir brought out by Rangabhoomi was released by Gurme Suresh Shetty.

The award winning theatrical troupes were honoured on the occasion. Dr H Shantharam, Honorary President of Rangabhoomi,  Tallur Shivaram Shetty, its President, Vasudeva Rao, General Secretary and others were present.


The first prize winning  play “ Mahakala” was presented on the occasion.
