Mangalore, Feb 6, 2014 : It has been reliably gathered that the police have taken into custody as many as twenty persons in connection with the vandalism by a group of miscreants in Ullal area on February 4, Tuesday night.Sources said more arrests are likely.
Earlier locals protested for the second time outside the Ullal police station on February 5, Wednesday evening. Police had to even resort to lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Section 144 has also been clamped to prevent any furher untoward incident.
Mangalore Police Commissioner R Hithendra himself monitored the security situation and went around various places in Ullal by foot for nearly 2 kms to oversee the situation.Deputy Commissioner of Police, five inspectors from the city police commissionerate and four teams of Karnataka state reserve police and as many as 100 police personnel from outside the district have arrived in Ullal to take control of the situation.
As many as three houses were stoned, a bike and a car damaged and two boats damaged by miscreants on Tuesday night. It is learnt the miscreants had first banged the doors of the house of Satish Kotian of Mogaveerapatna and then grasped the hands of his wife who opened the door. They even attacked her son who had to be admitted to hospital.
Vandalism began later on when rival groups clashed.
There is also information that a few youth abused some women in foul language forcing the latter to try to enter a mosque but were duly prevented by the cops.
State Minister for Health and Family Welfare UT Khader who is the MLA of the constituency has appealed the public to maintain calm and assured that police will initiate stern action against the trouble makers.
