Udupi, Dec 11, 2011: The Udupi police have arrested 3 people for alleged involvement in the conspiracy to murder Rakesh Malli, Congress leader and industrialist, based in Mangalore.
The arrested are Balakrishna Sherigar, Shreyas of Kudroli, and Deekshit Poojary of Maroli. All three are alleged to be associates of underworld don Vishwanath Koraga Shetty, who is currently hiding in Dubai. The police have also seized 22 bullets, 2 pistols, and a car from the trio.
The confiscated car belongs to Anish Shetty, a newspaper distributor, and the pistols are believed to have been imported from Dubai.
Malli, who was once associated with underworld don Muttappa Rai, is now involved in social welfare and political activities. However, he continues to be affected by the rivalry between the two underworld dons.
The arrested will be produced in an Udupi court on Sunday.
The police say that all the three have a criminal background with cases of rape, murder, and others booked against them.
Balakrishna Sherigar, who stands accused of being the mastermind of the conspiracy, was a previous member of Jayakarnataka Vedike. Along with a Shri Rama Sene leader, he was involved in a kidnap case. He also stands accused of several rape and robbery cases.
Attempt to murder cases have been registered against Deekshit Poojary in Kadri and Barke police stations and also against Shreyas in Urwa and Barke police stations.
