Udupi, Feb 16, 2026: A student in Manipal has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol at high speed and causing a series of accidents. The accused has been identified as Abhimanyu Negi.
Late on the night of February 14, he reportedly crashed into seven two-wheelers that were parked in a row along the roadside. The car also collided with an auto-rickshaw traveling in the opposite direction, injuring its 76-year-old driver, Shivaprasad, a resident of Badagabettu. The victim sustained an internal head injury.
According to reports, the student was driving recklessly at high speed from near the college road when he lost control of the vehicle. The car swerved sharply to both the left and right sides of the road, causing extensive damage. Authorities noted that had the vehicle entered the highway at the same speed, the consequences could have been far more serious.
The car involved bore a Haryana registration number. The two-wheelers damaged in the incident belonged to employees of nearby establishments and were parked along the roadside.
A case has been registered at the Manipal Police Station.
This stretch of road is frequently used by employees and the public during both day and night. Minor accidents have reportedly occurred in the area before, often due to heavy vehicles being driven at high speeds.
