Mangalore, April 12, 2012 : A tsunami alert was issued in DK on Wednesday after an earthquake was experienced off the coast of Indonesia, following which Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner of DK, convened a meeting to discuss various precautionary measures that can be taken.
Stating that there is no need to panic, the DC said that the tremors experienced in certain parts of Mangalore were slight and the home guards, police department, and fire service are on the alert.
Further, he said that three teams have been formed to remain alert in coastal places such as Ullal, Bengre, Sulthan Battery, and Sasihithlu. Arrangements have been made to move people residing by the sea shore to safer places in case any tsunami strikes. Arrangements have also been made to prevent people from rushing to the beaches and sea shores out of curiosity. He also said that KSRTC buses have been identified to move people quickly to safe places in case of an emergency and that cooks have also been appointed to prepare food for the evacuees.
The DC has also instructed officials to arrange 4 boats belonging to NMPT and Fisheries Department to deal with emergency situations.
Seemanth Kumar Singh, the police commissioner; Dayanand, the additional DC; Dr. Harish Kumar, the MCC commissioner; Dr. Venkatesh, the assistant commissioner; Tahsildar Ravichandra Nayak; and many others were also present.
Last noon, buildings in Kodialbail, Light House Hill Road, and Kuloor experienced tremors, making people rush out of the buildings in panic. Udupi also experienced tremors at 2:30 p.m., but these tremors were experienced only by people who live or work on the top floors of multistoried structures. In Manipal, people rushed out of flats and workplaces in panic.
Udupi has also made similar arrangements to deal with emergency situations. Dr. M. T. Reju, the DC of Udupi, said that officials have been directed to remain alert and that rescue teams were made ready.
