Transfer police commissioner and DC of DK – KKSV

Mangalore, Aug 2, 2012 : The Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV) has demanded that DC Channappa Gowda and Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh must be transferred from the city for their inability to prevent attacks such as the recent attack on Morning Mist Home Stay.

Addressing reporters at a press meet on Wednesday, Suresh Bhat Bakrabail, president of the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike, said that the inability of the DC and the police commissioner to prevent attacks by saffron elements must be thoroughly investigated and the duo must be transferred from the city. He also demanded that C. T. Ravi must be removed from the post of district-in-charge minister for DK.

Besides, the vedike demanded strict action to be taken against the police who failed to stop the mob from attacking students in the resort. Some of the other demands of the vedike include the withdrawal of FIRs filed against reporters who broadcast the incident, the re-arrest of Corporator Mohan Padil for clearly supporting the attack, the banning of saffron organizations, and many others.

Speaking on the occasion, Choodamani, member of the KKSV and the Mangalore Citizen’s Association, said that media ought not to have shown videos of girls being molested and assaulted although it did a good job in highlighting the atrocities of saffron elements.

Kamala Gowda, a woman representative, also expressed her opinion that the media need not have shown video footages of girls being molested. Responding to statements made by certain people who blamed the female victims for wearing revealing dresses, she said that, if these people are concerned about semi-nudity being a threat to Indian culture, they must ban companies that manufacture revealing clothes and advertisement companies that show semi-nude women.

Alwyn Colaco of Karnataka Mission Network, also a member of the KKSV, said that different faiths might have different dress codes, but the Constitution of India does not criminalize wearing revealing dresses. The female victims of the resort attack are, therefore, not guilty of any crime, he added. Expressing his opinion that one cannot expect the state government to take any action against the criminals, he pointed out that the government did not take action against culprits involved in the church attacks.

The KKSV has also announced that it will organize a massive protest against the Padil resort attack on Aug 4, Monday in collaboration with students, women’s organization, and progressive thinkers’ organizations. The protest will include a procession from Jyothi Circle to the DC’s office, where the KKSV will organize a public protest meeting. B. T. Lalitha, the former minister; Gowri Lankesh, the reporter; and progressive thinkers Jyothi Guruprasad and Sabeeha Bhoomigowda will take part in the protest.
