Mangalore, June 23: Prominent trade unions such as AITUC, CITU, INTUC, HMS, and Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh organized a massive protest against petrol price hike in front of the DC’s office on June 23 Thursday.
B. Madhava, the vice president of CITU state committee, said that petrol price hike has had an adverse effect on the life of the average citizen, adding that the centre is least bothered about the plight of the people. Flaying the centre’s proposal to hike the price of LPG and diesel, he said that petrol prices were stable, but began soaring soon after the assembly election results in five states were announced. He also pointed out the fact that the reason for petrol price hike is hike in tax rates.
Speaking on the occasion, Vishwanath Shetty, the BMS district president, said that rise in prices of essential commodities, which is causing distress to poor people, is because of the hike in fuel prices. Criticizing the state government for favoring capitalists over the working classes, he pointed out that amendments have not yet been made in the pay-scale of labourers.
Overr 200 people participated in the protest, during which issues such as social justice and the adverse effects of price hikes on the common people were discussed.
Vasanth Achari, the district general secretary of CITU, and Sunil Kumar Bajal, the honorary president of the union, were also present.
