Mangalore, Jan 21, 2011: The Indian Railways is also reported to have expressed its keenness to take up the Tiruvananthapuram-Mangalore high speed rail corridor project on a priority basis.
Meanwhile, the Centre at a high level meet convened by the Prime Minister’s office has promised financial assistance for the proposed project. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been entrusted with preparation of a detailed project report to be submitted within six months. If the project is realized, commuters from Mangalore can reach Thiruvananthapuram in 3 hours. The ambitious high-speed rail corridor project will link the entire stretch from the Kerala capital in the south to Kasargod in the north and further to Mangalore in neighbouring Karnataka.
The project is expected to be a public-private partnership, with technical and financial collaboration of the Indian Railways, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and central and state governments.
The Railways had proposed six high-speed train corridors for conducting pre-feasibility studies. These included Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar, Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Hyderabad-Dornakal-Vijaywada-Chennai, Chennai-Bangalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulam-Trivandrum, Howrah-Haldia and Delhi-Agra-Lucknow-Varanasi.
