Mangaluru, August 30, 2026: Preparations for Monti Fest, one of the major festivals of the Christian community in Dakshina Kannada, have begun with the nine-day Novena prayers commencing at churches under the Mangaluru Diocese on Sunday.

The Novena, held ahead of the festival commemorating the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will feature special prayers and religious ceremonies each day.

Monti Fest preparations begin

Monti Fest holds a special place in the cultural and religious traditions of the coastal Christian community. A key tradition is the blessing of newly harvested rice, which families share and use as part of their traditional festival celebrations.

The festival also reflects the region’s rich family and cultural heritage. Coastal families living across India and abroad continue to celebrate Monti Fest, maintaining their connection with their roots and traditions.

At Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ladyhill, Urwa, children offered flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary during the Novena service held on Sunday. Parish priest Fr. Benjamin Pinto led the religious ceremonies. Assistant parish priest Fr. Denzil Rodrigues and resident priest Fr. Victor D’Souza were present.

Monti Fest, also known as Kural Parb, will be celebrated on September 8. During the nine-day Novena, children will offer flowers to the Infant Mary, and the participating children will be given sweets by the church.
