Three police officers suspended over inaction in Kudupu mob lynching case

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, May 1, 2025: In connection with the mob lynching incident at Kudupu, three police personnel from the Mangaluru Rural Police Station—Inspector Shivakumar K R, Head Constable Chandra P, and Constable Yallalinga—have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

The incident took place on April 27, during a cricket match at Kudupu ground, where a group of individuals assaulted and killed Ashraf, a man from Kerala. Despite early reports, it is alleged that the police failed to respond with due seriousness. Public criticism mounted over the perceived inaction, prompting authorities to arrest 20 individuals involved in the assault.

According to reports, a caller named Deepak had informed the police about the attack while it was in progress. Although the local police, including the inspector, received the alert, they allegedly failed to escalate the matter to senior officials.

Initially registered as an Unnatural Death Report (UDR), the case was later reclassified as mob lynching. The suspension of the three officers follows findings of gross negligence for not reporting the incident to higher authorities despite having prior knowledge.
