Bengaluru techie loses Rs 1.86 lakh in delivery scam, gets tile instead of phone

Bengaluru, Oct 31, 2025: A Bengaluru-based software engineer, Premanand, lost Rs 1.86 lakh in an alleged Amazon delivery scam after receiving a piece of tile instead of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 smartphone he had ordered online.

Premanand, a resident of Yelachenahalli, had paid in full using his HDFC credit card when he placed the order on October 14.

The package was delivered on October 19 around 4.16 pm. However, when he recorded a video of the unboxing, he was shocked to find only a square white tile inside the box instead of the high-end smartphone.

He immediately lodged a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and later approached the Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station.

An FIR has been registered under Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319 (cheating by personation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 66D (cheating by personation using computer resources) of the Information Technology Act.

Police have begun investigating to trace those behind the scam.

In another case from Mumbai, a 71-year-old woman lost Rs 18.5 lakh while trying to order a litre of milk through an online delivery app in August.

The woman, who lives in Wadala, received a call from a man identifying himself as “Deepak,” an executive of a milk company. He sent her a link and asked her to fill in her details to complete the order.

Unaware of the trap, she followed the instructions while staying on the call for nearly an hour. A few days later, she discovered that her life savings had been drained from three bank accounts. Police believe the scammer gained access to her phone through the fraudulent link. Authorities have urged people to be cautious while making online purchases or sharing personal details.
