Sullia: Man arrested for derogatory Facebook post against CM and Banu Mushtaq

Sullia, Oct 30, 2025: A Facebook user has been arrested for allegedly posting derogatory remarks against the Chief Minister and writer, activist, and advocate Banu Mushtaq following the inauguration of the Dasara festival. Cases have been registered at both Sullia and Subrahmanya police stations.


Purusha Acharya-Derogatory post


According to police sources, a Facebook account under the name Purusha Acharya had posted objectionable content targeting Banu Mushtaq and the Chief Minister. Following this, Sullia police registered a case (Crime No. 112/2025) under Sections 296, 196, and 354 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), while Subrahmanya police registered another case (Crime No. 55/2025) under Sections 353(3) and 353(4) of the BNS.

With assistance from the Dakshina Kannada District Police’s Social Media Monitoring Cell, Sullia police detained the accused, identified as Purushothama Acharya Barimaru from Bantwal taluk, for questioning. Police said further legal proceedings are underway.
