Bengaluru, Mar 27, 2026: The Karnataka government has announced a relaxation in the minimum age requirement for Class 1 admissions for the academic year 2026–27.

Speaking during the Assembly session on Thursday, Primary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the existing minimum age of 6 years will be relaxed by two months, making children aged 5 years and 10 months eligible for admission.

He added that the government is working on introducing a new law to provide a permanent solution for LKG and UKG admissions. “The department will bring in legislation,” he said.

The minister noted that parents have been facing confusion and running from place to place regarding admissions. Taking the issue seriously, the government has decided to grant this relaxation.

Under Chapter 3, Section 20 of the Karnataka Education Act, 1993, a 60-day exemption is being provided for Class 1 admissions. He also said that necessary changes will be made to the admission software.
