Mangaluru, May 8, 2026: District-in-Charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Friday inspected the ongoing construction of the vehicular bridge connecting Sulthan Bathery and Tannirbhavi across the Gurupura river and said the project is likely to be inaugurated by the last week of August or the first week of September.
The bridge is being constructed under the Mangaluru Smart City Limited project at a cost of Rs 64 crore. The minister said work on the project has been accelerated and the jacking up of the bow-string girder is scheduled for June.

Built in compliance with the provisions of National Waterways-43, the bridge will ensure uninterrupted boat movement beneath it. All types of vehicles will be permitted on the bridge once completed, the minister said.
He added that the bridge is expected to boost tourism in the coastal belt, including the Tannirbhavi Beach and nearby areas.
Officials said the 285-metre-long project includes a 100-metre uninterrupted navigation span with a vertical clearance of 10 metres. Once completed, the bridge will provide direct connectivity between Bengre-Tannirbhavi and the core areas of Mangaluru city.
The project is expected to benefit nearly 4,000 families in the Bengre region, who currently depend mainly on ferry services that remain suspended during nights, monsoon and rough weather conditions. In the absence of ferry services, residents are forced to travel around 15 km via Kuloor, taking nearly 30 to 35 minutes due to traffic congestion.
Officials said the new bridge will reduce travel time between Bengre-Tannirbhavi and Mangaluru city to around 8 to 10 minutes, while strengthening social and economic integration between coastal settlements and the mainland city areas.
