Mangaluru, June 21, 2026: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has urged the Karnataka government to make pedestrian safety, accessibility and mobility key components of the forthcoming Master Plan for Mangaluru.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, with copies marked to the Urban Development Minister, the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner and the Commissioner of the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), the MP highlighted the need for pedestrian-friendly urban planning.

Referring to a recent Supreme Court judgment that recognised the right to walk safely on designated footpaths as a fundamental right, Capt. Chowta noted that planning authorities and local bodies have a responsibility to create and maintain adequate pedestrian infrastructure.
Stating that the upcoming Master Plan presents a crucial opportunity to shape Mangaluru’s growth in the coming decades, he urged the government to integrate pedestrian safety and accessibility into the city’s long-term development strategy.
The MP pointed out that a large number of students, senior citizens, daily commuters and workers depend on walking as part of their everyday mobility. With the city expanding rapidly and traffic volumes increasing, he stressed the importance of developing safe, continuous and accessible pedestrian infrastructure.
