Mangalore, August 10, 2011: The street vendors, under the leadership of CITU, organized a protest in front of the Traffic West Police Station in Bunder, condemning police atrocities against women, today.

CPI (M) Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said that street vendors work for their livelihood and that it is their right to work for a living. They have requested Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) to discontinue its Civic Tiger operation for a month because they are on a fast during Ramzan, in spite of which, Traffic Sub Inspector Gopal Krishna Bhat has confiscated a weighing scale from a lady street vendor called Shobha and has beaten her up.

Although the police department is part of the government and is infamous for not supporting the poor, he said that such attacks should not take place. Police atrocities against the poor are on the rise, he complained.

Vasanth Achary, the general secretary of CITU, said that SI Gopal Krishna Bhat once had a good reputation, which is now tarnished. The police also stand accused of attacking street vendors near Lady Goschen, he said, adding that the street vendors’ fight for justice will continue at a higher level.

SI Gopal Krishna Bhat said that the police had just confiscated the weighing scale and had not beaten anybody up.

ACP Balasubramaniam, Traffic Inspector Vinay Gaonkar, and others were also present.
