Mangalore, Feb 23, 2012 : The Botany department of St. Aloysius College (autonomous) organized a 2-day national seminar titled Microbes: Diversity and Their Implications, sponsored by the Biotechnology Department of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology under the Star College Scheme. Dr. K. R. Shridhar, the professor of biosciences department in Mangalore University, inaugurated the event on Feb 21.




Prof. M. L. Sureshnath delivered the welcome address and Fr. Swebert D’Silva SJ, the principal of the college, delivered the presidential address, in which he announced that St. Aloysius College is one of the 147 star colleges in India.
Dr. K. V. Nagalakshmi, the organizing secretary, and Prof. Ronald Pinto, the vice principal of the Science Block, were also on the dais. While Rajini Nayak proposed the vote of thanks, Niveditha Nityananda was the MC.
The seminar comprised 8 sessions by resource persons from universities in and outside Karnataka. The sessions were Microbial Diversity conducted by Dr. Shridhar of Mangalore University; Aerobiology conducted by Dr. Shripad N. Agashe, the retired professor of Bangalore University; Food Microbiology by Dr. N. M. Sachindra of CFTRI in Mysore; Agricultural Microbiology by Dr. Murali Gopal of CPCRI of Kasargod; Food Microbiology by Dr. Patrick Tauro, the former director of Haryana Agriculture University; Environmental Microbiology by Dr. N. M. Sachindra of CFTRI in Mysore; and Dental Microbiology by Dr. Vishnu Das Prabhu of Yenepoya Medical College.
A number of papers and posters were presented on these two days.
The valedictory ceremony was held with J. R. Lobo, the executive director of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, as the chief guest and with Fr. Leo D’Souza, the director of the Laboratory of Applied Biology, presiding.
