Mangalore, Sep 2: The Department of Chemistry of St. Agnes College organized a one-day symposium titled Rasa Chethana in association with Pilikula Regional Science Centre Mangalore and Text Book Society, DSERT in the conference hall of St. Agnes College on September 2 Friday.
Prof. Uday Maitra of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore inaugurated the event. In his keynote address, he lamented that the application of chemistry in daily life is on the decline, adding that the number of women chemists are very low in India.
Dr. Sr. Prem D’Souza, the principal of St. Agnes College, presided over the event. She honored chemistry teachers Prof. Shivaram Holla, Prof. Mohan Shetty, Prof. V. S. Lasrado, Vasanthi K., and Prof. B. N. Bhat.
Dr. H. Jayantha spoke of the need to organize this seminar, informing that 2011 is the international year of chemistry.
The objective of this symposium is to provide a common platform of chemistry experts, teachers, and officials to meet and interact and discuss topics such as ignorance of chemistry, revamping chemistry syllabus, and much more.
Experimental demonstrations, experience sharing, and panel discussions will form part of the event.
